The moisture test comes first
Basements in this part of Pennsylvania are older than the houses that sit on newer ground. A lot of Berks County housing stock predates the war, and those slabs were poured thin, without a vapour barrier underneath, straight onto whatever was there. Coating one is completely doable and it transforms the room, but it is the one surface where the moisture question has to be answered honestly before anything else happens.
Water moves up through a slab as vapour whether you can see it or not. If it is moving fast enough and you seal a coating over the top, the vapour pressure builds underneath and eventually lifts the coating off in sheets. That is the single most common way a basement floor coating fails, and it has nothing to do with the product.
So we test before we quote the system. A simple calcium chloride or relative humidity test tells us what the slab is doing, and the answer changes the specification rather than the answer to whether we can do it. High readings mean a moisture tolerant primer goes down first. Very high readings mean we tell you so rather than taking the job and hoping.
That conversation is not one most companies want to have, because it occasionally ends with us saying the slab needs a drainage problem solved before a coating makes sense. We would rather tell you that at the walkthrough than come back in eighteen months.

A basement usually has two small windows and whatever the ceiling fixtures give you. A dark floor absorbs that light and the room stays a basement no matter what you do to the walls. A light flake blend does the opposite, throwing light back up into the space so it reads as a finished room instead of storage.
Dakota Grey, Lunar, Light Grey and Tan and Bone are the ones that get picked most often for exactly that reason. The flake also does something a solid colour cannot, which is disguise the unevenness that almost every old poured basement slab has. A flat gloss colour telegraphs every ripple. A chip surface breaks up the reflection so you stop seeing them.
A floor that was ground properly and repaired before the first coat will still look right in ten years.

Basements are never empty rectangles. There is a steel post in the middle of the span, a bulkhead, a furnace pad, a sump pit, a laundry hookup and a set of stairs coming down into the corner. All of that has to be cut in by hand, and the quality of a basement floor is judged entirely on how those edges look.
We coat up to and around each obstruction with a cut line rather than stopping short and leaving a grey border, and we bring the finish up onto the stair nosing where it makes sense so the transition is not an afterthought. Where there is a floor drain the coating gets terminated into it properly so water still goes where it is meant to.
What a finished basement floor is actually worth
A basement is the cheapest square footage a house has. The room already exists, it already has walls, a ceiling, power and light. What stops most people using it is that the floor is bare grey concrete which sheds dust, feels cold and reads as storage no matter what else you do to the space.
Coating that slab is a two day job that changes the category of the room. It stops the dust, it takes a mop, it reflects light instead of swallowing it, and it makes putting furniture or gym equipment or a workbench down there feel reasonable. Compared with any kind of building work it is a very small amount of money for a very large change.
The honest caveat is the one at the top of this page. Old Berks County basements can have moisture moving up through them, and that has to be measured rather than hoped about. Every basement we quote gets tested, and the specification follows the number.

None of this is an upgrade or an optional extra. It is what the job is, and anything unusual about your slab gets raised before the work starts.
What happens across the two days
Day one starts with clearing and masking, then grinding. The diamond grinders run with dust extraction attached, which keeps the mess to something reasonable and keeps silica dust out of the air. We work the slab until it is uniformly open and clean rather than until it looks clean.
Still on day one, the repairs go in. Cracks and divots are filled, pitting is levelled and the joints get treated. Then the base coat goes down and the flake is broadcast into it by hand, wall to wall, until the surface is saturated.
Day two is the scrape back, the vacuum and the topcoat. Scraping is what converts a rough chip surface into an even one, and skipping it is why some flake floors feel like sandpaper. Then the polyaspartic seals everything in.
You can normally walk on it that evening. Furniture and light use come back the next day, and a garage is ready for a car after about three days once the system has hardened enough to take hot tyres without marking.

My basement gets damp. Can it still be coated?
Usually yes, but we test the slab first. Water moving up through concrete as vapour is the most common cause of a basement coating lifting, so we measure it rather than guess. A high reading means a moisture tolerant primer goes down first. A very high reading means we tell you the drainage needs solving before a coating makes sense.
How long does a basement floor take?
Two days for most basements, the same as a garage, though a room with a lot of obstructions takes longer because the cut in work around posts, pits and stairs is all done by hand. You will want to keep off it overnight between the coats.
What is the cleaning routine?
Sweep or dust mop it, and wash it with warm water and a neutral cleaner when it needs it. In a garage a hose does the job. What you should not use is anything acidic, any wax and any polish, because those either attack the finish or sit on top of it dulling the look you paid for.
Is it safe for children and pets?
Yes. The system cures to a hard, non toxic surface with nothing continuing to come off it, and the flake texture gives better footing for a dog than sealed concrete does. It also stops the slab shedding the fine grey dust that bare concrete gives off constantly.
Do the repairs show through the finished floor?
They should not. Repairs get cut back, filled and levelled flush before any coating goes on, and the flake broadcast on top breaks up the surface visually so even an older slab reads as even. A flat gloss colour is what telegraphs every patch, which is one more reason chip finishes hold up better on real concrete.
What does the lifetime warranty cover?
Residential interior floors carry a true lifetime warranty against the system failing, which means peeling, delaminating or losing bond to the slab. It is written down rather than promised on the phone, and it is the reason we will not shortcut the grinding stage. Exterior work is warranted separately because sun, ice and ground movement are a different set of conditions.
What is the current lead time?
It moves with the season, so the answer you get on the phone is the real one rather than a standard line. Winter is generally the easiest time to get an interior floor booked because the outdoor calendar is closed. Spring and early summer are the tightest, mostly because of deck and patio work.
Where do the products come from?
They are made in the USA, and that has been the case since the company started. It is partly principle and mostly track record, because these are the systems we have watched hold up through Pennsylvania winters on floors we can drive back to. We are not going to swap to something cheaper we cannot vouch for.
